Hypnosis, Hypnotherapy & NLP

“In itself hypnosis is not a therapy but it is used in hypnotherapy to access the unconscious mind in the treatment of emotional and psychological problems”

During hypnosis, the client is in full control and is totally aware, just in a deeply relaxed heightened state of awareness, where they are able to open their minds to beneficial suggestions. Whilst in this state of awareness it is the subconscious mind that is able to accept these positive suggestions.

“Hypnosis, is the art and science of communicating new ideas to the subconscious mind along with the aid of modern NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) techniques it promotes healing at many levels”

Hypnotherapy is widely used to help with physical, mental and emotional disorders which actually produce physical symptoms. Hypnotherapy can generally help with many issues or problems you are finding hard to deal with alone, whether it be, thoughts and actions you wish to banish or indeed acquire, or emotional suffering that is perhaps too overwhelming to deal with on your own.

Who can be hypnotised? Virtually everyone can be hypnotised, although, some are more readily hypnotisable than others and ones willingness to allow themselves to be hypnotised at the time has to be taken into account.  The willingness will itself depend upon a number of factors, not least of which will be the strength of the person’s particular need and their trust and confidence in the therapist concerned.

Who will be in control when I am in a trance? Clients are sometimes concerned that they will lose control whilst in a hypnotic trance and act in a manner they wouldn’t usually act in if they were not in trance.  However, general consensus indicates that regardless of how deeply people may go in hypnosis and however passive they may appear to be, they actually remain in full control of the situation.  They are fully able to talk if they so wish to (or not as the case may be) and can terminate the session, stand up and leave the room at any time. A hypnotised person cannot be made to do anything against their usual ethical or moral judgement or religious belief.   Hypnotherapy is a scientifically respected and mainstream method of therapy and in the hands of a properly trained therapist, hypnosis is extremely safe.  The subconscious mind is very protective and will always reject any unacceptable hypnotic suggestion.  Almost without exception most people find the state extremely pleasant and relaxing.

What issues can hypnotherapy treat? It is a recognised treatment for relieving anger, stress, depression and anxiety, as well as all related symptoms.  Where difficulties are of psychological or stress related origin, symptoms can include IBS, fears, phobias, OCD, panic attacks, disempowerment, migraine, insomnia, loss of confidence, the list is endless.  Hypnotherapy can also be used in enhancing performance, breaking bad habits, helping people to achieve their goals and more importantly aids in reducing those clients medically diagnosed with high blood pressure.

How does hypnotherapy work?

Hypnotherapy works at two levels:

  1. Consciously, control is restored by understanding how stresses are unknowingly caused and maintained in everyday life and why stresses produce the symptoms that it does.
  2. Subconsciously, hypnotherapy works by locating and re-wiring those subconscious beliefs which are limiting or producing symptoms unnecessarily.

How many sessions will be necessary?

No one problem is the same as we are all uniquely different so it follows no one approach to resolving a problem will be the same either.  Generally speaking one of two or a combination of therapies may be adopted in order to resolve presenting issues.  This approach will either be by Suggestive Hypnotherapy or Analytical Hypnotherapy: Suggestive Hypnotherapy, is a powerful way of removing unwanted habits as well as boosting self-confidence and calmness.  It is also useful for stressors such as interviews, driving tests, exam nerves, etc and fears in general such as visits to the dentist.  Often these issues are resolved in 1 or 3 sessions by way of positive and carefully worded suggestions. Analytical Hypnotherapy, is a psychotherapy, talking therapy, which combines hypnosis with analytical techniques, the purpose being to establish the root cause of unwanted issues.  Therapy usually consists of 6-8 weekly sessions of one hour. Both approaches are entirely safe as well as enjoyable and clients often report to be feeling calmer and in better control of their lives.  In short simple issues such as habit breaking, exam nerves and ego strengthening can be addressed in 1 to 2 sessions.  Simple phobias, not those heightened by anxiety levels, can be tackled in 2 to 3 sessions.  More serious issues will take a little longer and as every case is unique, it may take 6 to 8 intensive weekly sessions.  In any event I will always aim to get you to where you want to be in the shortest amount of time possible.

How will I manage symptoms, at the time they happen or if between sessions?

Self-hypnosis, meditation and mindfulness training is offered as part of our specialist programmes.  Training will be given during a session and mindfulness tasks will also be provided for you to practice at home. You should then be equipped with the tools to manage unwanted habits or issues, as and when they happen – For example, if you are afraid of spiders, you can run through the self-hypnosis exercise before you tackle the creepy-crawly in the tub or even a trip to the dentist!
